Book 3

The Grier Manuscripts

Stephen Grier (c.1824–1894), a native of north Longford, moved to Newpark, Bohey, Gortletteragh, in south Leitrim in 1852. An uilleann piper and fiddle player, he compiled a collection of over 1,000 melodies, transcribed mainly in the 1880s.

Now in collaboration with the current custodian of the Grier Collection, Hugh Maguire, the ten music manuscripts in Grier’s hand (plus 4 others that accompany the collection) have been digitised and made publicly available for the first time.

ITMA has also developed a suite of resources to complement the original manuscripts:

– Contemporary transcriptions of the individual tunes downloadable as one PDF per manuscript
– Interactive scores of all 1,153 tunes, including one downloadable PDF per tune
– Furls of Music: The Michael McNamara Sound Collection featuring tunes from the Grier Manuscripts

The following books are part of the Grier Manuscript Collection and are written by a number of unidentified scribes.
